Matthew is part of our Central Auckland team, operating mainly in Sandringham, Blockhouse Bay, and Waterview. He does lawn mowing, mulching, and small gardening using standard mowers, a Shindaiwa line trimmer, and his gardening multi-tool.

Prior to joining Crewcut, Matthew used to work for an IT company. He said he’s glad he got out that job because he was doing shift work, which wasn’t ideal anymore at his age. He says he was also hoping to lose some weight by doing something that required physical outdoor work and that’s exactly what he got when he started his lawn mowing franchise a year ago. He mainly decided to go with Crewcut due to brand recognition. “It was always at the back of your mind. It was the biggest out there, or at least we must be pretty close,” he said. His goal for the business is to grow it a bit more and try to get more clients within his neighbourhood.

“There is a particular area where I live at that I need to start doing more of. It’s less travel and it’s just down the road. I’ve got four or five currently and it’s just so handy. You really notice it because whenever they come up, you always put them last because you don’t have to worry about driving through traffic and essentially, you’re almost home,” Matthew says.

When he’s not mowing lawns, you’ll find him on the road cycling. He shoots out to the Waitakere Ranges at times or goes to St. Heliers where his son used to live. He also participates in races occasionally but not as much as compared to the old days.

The biggest thing he’s learned since joining Crewcut is that communication with customers should be a priority on top of constantly letting them know what’s going on. “Keep in touch, you know, because things happen – like the drought. You get customers that you just kind of agree to put things on hold, and they sometimes forget, and then you ring them out and they go, ‘Oh yeah, I was waiting for you to call, I thought you were going to call me.’ So it’s better to not wait and just talk,” Matthew shares.

His advice to newcomers is for them to do their part in building the business up and not just waiting for leads from the head office. Matthew mentions he has a couple of customers that recommended him to neighbours and random people who saw his vehicle and got in touch. He says the best yet simplest idea would be to just saturate one’s neighbourhood with cards and letterbox drops. “You know, just get on your bicycle, ride around your neighbourhood, and stick them in boxes,” he says.

Get in touch with Matthew if you’re located in Central Auckland and are looking for lawn mowing services from a professional, customer-focused Crewcut operator.
