Murray has been with Crewcut for over seven years now, covering different suburbs in Pakuranga, Howick, Dannemora, Saint Heliers, and Manurewa. He switched to Husqvarna for his tools because he believes it’s a brand that offers great after sales service. “Going out into the warehouse near the airport and seeing that 99% of the time the parts are waiting there is good. If something goes wrong, it can just be ordered,” Murray shares. He also finds the huge discounts Crewcut operators get from Husqvarna helpful.

Prior to Crewcut, he used to do a big mixture of creative activities doing graphic design and 3D animation. He’s done a couple of music videos and did work on bro’Town. When he left school at 15, he got a job on the Council and worked there for 10 years, and four of those years was in commercial mowing.

The past year was pretty challenging for Murray and his business. He had his gallbladder taken out and had to ask other people to look after his run. He said he was drained physically, mentally, and financially during this time and he had to turn it all back around as soon as he came back.

Murray says his best skill in the business is his ability to keep going. “I guess I call it a little mowing run where I was able to unlock a little more,” he says. He developed a mindset wherein he just keeps going. “It can get hard but I just don’t give up,” he adds. His best advice for a newcomer in the business is to be aware of the costing. It’s easy to figure out what your time and energy are worth based on the initial setup and the ongoing running costs of your business.

The biggest things he’s learned from Crewcut is time management. “It is a lawn mowing run. Slow and steady wins the day. Treat it like a long-distance run not a quick sprint to the finish line,” says Murray. He also mentions that an operator must also pick one’s battles with the weather.
