- Mount Maunganui
Darin is one of your local operators in Arataki, Bayfair, Mount Maunganui, and Papamoa. With a new set of Stihl branded gear and commercial Honda mowers to pair, he provides his range of services including lawn mowing, gardening, pruning, water blasting and hedge trimming. He comes from 30 years in the IT and telecommunications industry, with four of those years running an audio/visual company. He soon found he was getting too busy when working for a wireless internet company in Tauranga, so he wanted a new career. So he met with a Crewcut franchisee who was selling his company and got pulled into the idea of lawn business ownership. He found talking to the franchisee and other franchisees helped convince his move. He also wanted a change into a more physical role to get his fitness back. His goal is to work enough to make the income, but it’s all really about the lifestyle. By having time for his son, he finds great success.
In his spare time, Darin is a national touch referee, and the Provincial Director of Bay of Plenty Touch NZ. His role is to look after all the provincial referees, coach and manage several other rugby teams. Darin even finds the time to look after a couple of water polo teams. He does plenty of touring with the teams so having the flexibility with his job is helpful. Since joining Crewcut he has learnt how to do all the maintenance on his gear. He also has skills with being Ropes trained as well as Heights and Harness trained. The most useful thing he has learnt is to learn how to cut lawns for each individual. If you go in with an open mind to figure out how to make your customer happy, it will pay off. You need to understand the value of lawns, the importance of equipment, and how to quote as well. Stock up in the gear you need for the winter, and only take on work that you’re comfortable with. These are what will make your business successful.
