Ian delivers his lawn mowing service all over Rotorua with the majority of his clients being in Kawaha Point, Ngongotaha, Western Heights, and Lynmore. With a mix of ride-on mowing and push mowing, he relies on Briggs and Stratton mowers and they haven’t let him down yet. He also uses Stihl hand equipment to give the finishing touches on your lawn. By keeping a focus on lawn mowing, he can maintain his cycle of clients and can always leave them happy.
Before buying his business, Ian had experience in joinery, construction, and most recently glazing. When he was in business for himself with glazing he dealt with Phil the bank manager at the time who now happens to be the regional manager for Crewcut Rotorua. When Ian saw Phil working with Crewcut, he was interested to learn why he'd made the move and asked him more about his business. Ian was tired of working for someone else and he felt it was time for independence. He got in touch with Phil and has owned his business for years. He is happy that his business is a great way to pay the bills and be his own boss.
The time he doesn’t spend mowing lawns he dedicates to maintaining his gear and making sure everything runs smoothly. He also owns a horse and used to be really into his riding, though now he’s given the horse to a young girl who can spend more time with the horse. Ian says, when it comes to operating a lawn mowing business, you need to learn to be hard sometimes and not be a pushover. It’s your business and you must look after yourself just as much as you look after the customer. His advice to those looking to join the franchise is to attend the group meetings and listen to experienced guys. The people who don’t take advantage of being part of the group never do as well.
